Diary kept by Wheeler during his voyage from New York to San Francisco as a passenger aboard the ship Hannah Sprague. Describes shipboard life, weather, and attitudes of other passengers. Includes a single folded sheet containing a "vote of thanks from passengers to the officers of the barque" (Nov. 12, 1949).
